What Our Volunteers Say

I started volunteering at Hope Kitchen on a whim — my friend invited me one Friday and I haven't missed a week since. These families remind me what resilience really looks like. I come to serve but always leave feeling like I received more than I gave.

Teaching ESL at DFWROS has been one of the most rewarding experiences of my professional career. My students are motivated, warm, and deeply grateful. Watching someone gain the confidence to speak English for the first time — there's nothing quite like it. I encourage every educator to try it.

Volunteer FAQ

Is there a minimum age to volunteer?
Volunteers must be at least 16 years old to serve independently. Youth ages 14–15 are welcome to volunteer alongside a parent or guardian. For group school visits with chaperones, we accommodate students as young as 13. All minor volunteers require a signed parental consent form.
Do I need to commit to a regular schedule?
There is no strict minimum commitment. While we deeply appreciate recurring volunteers who come weekly or monthly — as consistency builds relationships with the families we serve — one-time volunteers are absolutely welcome. For specialized roles like ESL teaching or job coaching, a commitment of at least 4 weeks is encouraged.
What training will I receive?
All new volunteers complete a one-hour orientation covering our mission, community guidelines, safety protocols, and cultural sensitivity practices. Role-specific training is provided on your first shift — our experienced team will walk you through everything. Specialized roles (ESL, job coaching) include additional onboarding resources.
Do you accept volunteers who don't speak Arabic or Somali?
Absolutely. The majority of our volunteers do not speak refugee community languages. Our staff and bilingual volunteers facilitate communication. That said, if you do speak Arabic, Somali, Dari, Pashto, Burmese, or other languages common in refugee communities, your skills are incredibly valuable and we'd love to know.
Can I get a volunteer hours letter for school or work?
Yes. We provide official volunteer hour verification letters upon request. After completing your volunteer hours, email zeenik@dfwros.info with your name, dates of service, and the purpose of the letter. We typically respond within 5 business days. We are happy to sign school forms or complete employer community service documentation.
